The multi-state outbreak of fungal meningitis linked contaminated steroid injections from the New England Compounding Center has now grown to 317 cases and 24 deaths.OKLAHOMA CITY - The recall is widening on drugs manufactured by the New England Compounding Center and this time it does affect Oklahoma.
The multi-state outbreak of fungal meningitis linked contaminated steroid injections from the New England Compounding Center has now grown to 317 cases and 24 deaths.
There are no reported cases in Oklahoma of infections linked to the contaminated steroid injections, and no one in Oklahoma received the bad products. But now as investigators uncover faulty testing and sterilization procedures inside the pharmacy, the FDA as a precaution has widened the recall to all products produced by the pharmacy.
"If one medication was contaminated, there is a possibility of another medicine being contaminated in the facility where they are apparently finding some breaks in technique," said Becky Coffman, M.P.H., R.N., C.I.C., a Nurse Epidemiologist with the Oklahoma State Department of Health.
The list by the FDA reveals seven Oklahoma City locations that have received some products from the company, from major hospitals to a small dermatology clinic.
They all tell News 9 they have pulled the products in question off the shelves. Integris Hospital and the Mcbride Orthopedic Hospital say they have also began notifying patients.
The FDA is also recommending anyone why may have received the products to watch for warning signs of infection that include fever, pain, redness, swelling, and drainage.
